As an undergraduate senior at the University of South Carolina, Allen is a successful up-and-comer in the industry. His social personality and love for journalism encouraged Allen to seek opportunities that would bring him closer to the field, while helping to establish a future career.
“Back in high school I always knew that I loved communicating, public speaking, and talking to people… That is something that I knew I wanted to do… be in front of the camera and speak with people every single day.”
Described by himself as one of the best experiences of his life, Allen secured an internship at WSB-TV in Atlanta, which has helped to further his career aspirations in broadcast journalism. Considering where he is now, it was one of the best moves he’s made in his young career. Allen understands the importance of being accessible, and made the decision to dive head first into the world of social media, where constant entertainment, news, and information circulates. For him, it was far from a challenge, as he is already a naturally social person. In journalism and social media, Allen has found the best of both worlds, and is determined enough to create his own opportunities.

Allen credits Instagram “IG” as a resource that has opened doors for him in a big way. This platform has made it possible for him to interact with individuals he would normally not have access to, and network with on a professional level. Understanding the power of social media, this future anchor took a shot and sent a DM to one of his role models, Don Lemon (@donlemon/@donlemoncnn). Receiving a response back.
Allen definitely recognizes the benefit of IG and takes full advantage. He is all for messages in his DM…respectful ones, of course!…but interacting and communicating with followers, including shares, retweets and tagging, is what he really enjoys. Allen, like many of us, understands that not all platforms are created equal. He’s figured out which is better to showcase different aspects of his personal and professional life.
Allen has a true desire to influence more and build a stronger following, given his current profession. He is a firm believer that if you have eyes on you, you will influence others…and you will lead. This is something that has been proven time and again, confirming that as an individual with an audience, you take on a responsibility as a public figure and influencer.
As a member of the Residence Board at the University of South Carolina, Allen uses his position to influence students and their experiences on campus. After all, who better for students to relate to than one of their own? Allen is aware enough to know that even though he is not a viral sensation (i.e. Cash Me Outside Girl), he is still someone people look up to and with that in mind, is sure to conduct himself and post what’s in line with his beliefs and morals. In today’s society, this is something that is very necessary and appreciated. While he is a professional, Allen understands the lighter side of social media and works to keep it fun while immersing himself into becoming a stronger influence and presence on all of his social media platforms. As a journalist, Allen is already tweeting and posting the latest news, something that other journalists have and will continue to do. Allen is now one of many journalists who have embraced social media as a tool to quickly and easily inform and influence us and our communities.
Allen is no stranger to hard work, and has aspirations that will take him far. He has resolved to pursue a Master’s of Science in Journalism at Columbia University in New York, and works diligently in pursuit of that goal. Not stopping there, Allen also aspires to further develop himself as a brand.
“What I want to do is to start diving into influencing more… I really want to start taking off with Instagram as far as building yourself up goes.”
In the Journalism industry, we see it every day with household names like Anderson Cooper, Barbara Walters, Trevor Noah, Fred Blankenship, or Jovita Moore, to name a few. Allen is well on his way to joining them. One of his career aspirations is to sit on the Anchor Desk for WSB-TV or CNN, given his love of politics. As an already successful young man, Allen is eager to share his continued experiences, both personal and professional, with those who wish to follow his journey. His is a refreshing new voice to the world of broadcast journalism that we will be following and we encourage you to do the same.
